Brothers and sisters, peace be with you. Today’s passage is Ruth 3:1–18, and the theme is “A Night at the Threshing Floor: Requesting a Kinsman-Redeemer.”
Brothers and sisters, today we will reflect together on Ruth chapter 3—“A Night at the Threshing Floor, Requesting a Kinsman-Redeemer.” In this passage we see three people: Naomi, Ruth, and Boaz. Through their roles and interactions, we learn what love, obedience, and compassion look like in a life of faith. These three qualities not only shaped Ruth’s future, but also played a part in God’s salvation plan, for Ruth later appears in the genealogy of Jesus.
1. Naomi — A Visionary Who Empowers Others
The chapter begins with Naomi saying to Ruth:
“My daughter, I must find a home for you, where you will be well provided for.” (Ruth 3:1, NIV)
Naomi was an elderly widow with no security. She could easily have asked Ruth to stay by her side for the rest of her life. But she did not. Instead, she thought about Ruth’s future and sought a way forward for her. This is love that is not selfish—love that empowers.
Naomi was strategic and courageous. This gives us insight for today:
Brothers and sisters, if you shepherd or disciple others, true leadership is not about keeping people dependent on you. It is about empowering them, thinking of their future, and helping them walk into God’s calling and blessing. Naomi reminds us that spiritual leaders should have foresight—not only thinking about the present, but having spiritual strategy and courage to help younger believers find their God-given path.
2. Ruth — A Filial and Obedient Follower
The second character is Ruth. She could have returned to her parents’ home to start over. But she refused to leave Naomi. She once said that well-known line:
“Your people will be my people and your God my God.” (Ruth 1:16, NIV)
This meant: “Wherever you go, I will go. I will stay with you.”
That is not easy. If it were you or me, we might think: “I still have my whole life ahead—how can I be tied down caring for an elderly widow?” Yet Ruth stayed, cared for Naomi, and walked with her. This is genuine filial love.
Even more remarkable is her response to Naomi’s plan of secretly going to the threshing floor at night—a plan that could easily be misunderstood. Many of us would have said: “Are you sure? Is this really wise?” But Ruth simply answered:
“I will do whatever you say.” (Ruth 3:5 NIV)
This is obedience. True obedience does not wait until everything is fully understood. It follows because of trust—like a child holding a parent’s hand while crossing the road, not knowing the details but trusting completely. God often leads us this way. He rarely reveals the whole path at once. He wants us to obey even when we don’t understand. Ruth is a model of this kind of faith. Her loyalty and obedience brought her into God’s destiny. Though she was a foreigner, she became part of the genealogy of Jesus Christ.
3. Boaz — A Compassionate Redeemer with Principles
Lastly, we see Boaz. He was a compassionate man. Earlier, he instructed his workers to leave extra grain so the poor Ruth could gather. He did not despise foreigners but treated her with kindness.
Later, when Ruth approached him at night and said:
“Spread the corner of your garment over me, since you are a guardian-redeemer of our family.” (Ruth 3:9 NIV)
Boaz did not act rashly. Instead, he explained that there was another man who was an even closer relative with the first right of redemption.
This shows that Boaz was a man who respected proper order and ethics. He was not a “Mr. Yes”—not a people-pleaser doing whatever others wanted. He was compassionate, but he also had principles and boundaries. His integrity and kindness made him a redeemer Ruth could truly trust.
Boaz also foreshadows Jesus Christ—the One who truly redeems us, who spreads His wings over us, rescuing us from spiritual poverty, isolation, and loss, bringing us into God’s household.
Brothers and sisters, God is also calling us today:
• If you are a leader
Learn from Naomi—have insight, empower others, and guide people toward God’s destiny for them.
• If you are a disciple
Learn from Ruth—follow with trust even when you do not fully understand. Obedience in faith leads you into God’s blessing.
• When doing good
Remember: love and boundaries are not opposites.
Show compassion with integrity. A righteous person practices justice in love.
In our modern lives—whether in the workplace, family, or church—we need this balance: caring for those in need while upholding fairness and order.
May the Lord help each of us to live with the love of Naomi, the obedience of Ruth, and the compassion and integrity of Boaz, so that God’s redemption plan may be displayed in each of our lives. Amen.
