1 波阿斯上到城門,坐在那裏,看哪,波阿斯所說那個可以贖產業的至親經過。波阿斯說:「某某先生,請你轉回來,坐在這裏。」他就轉回來坐下。 2波阿斯又請了本城的十個長老來,對他們說:「請你們坐在這裏。」他們就都坐下。 3波阿斯對那至親說:「從摩押地回來的拿娥米,現在要賣我們弟兄以利米勒的那塊地。 4我想我應該向你說清楚:你可以買那塊地,當着在座的眾人和我百姓的長老面前,你若要贖就贖吧!倘若你不贖就告訴我,讓我知道,因為除了你以外,沒有人可以先贖,在你之後才輪到我。」那人說:「我要贖。」 5波阿斯說:「你從拿娥米和摩押女子路得手中買這地的時候,也當買死人的妻子,使死人在產業上留名。」 6那至親說:「這樣我就不能贖了,免得對我的產業有損。你儘管去贖我所當贖的吧,我不能贖了!」

7從前,在以色列中要確認任何交易,無論是贖業或買賣,一方必須脫鞋給另一方。以色列中都以此為證。 8那至親對波阿斯說:「你自己買吧!」於是把鞋脫了下來。 9波阿斯對長老和所有在場的百姓說:「你們今日都是證人;凡屬以利米勒,以及基連和瑪倫的,我都從拿娥米手中買下來了。 10我也娶瑪倫的妻子摩押女子路得,好讓死人可以在產業上留名,免得他的名在本族本鄉的城門中消失了。你們今日都是證人。」 11在城門坐着的所有百姓和長老說:「我們都是證人。願耶和華使進你家的這女子,像建立以色列家的拉結和利亞二人一樣。又願你在以法他得亨通,在伯利恆有名聲。 12願耶和華從這年輕女子賜你後裔,使你的家像她瑪從猶大所生法勒斯的家一樣。」

13於是,波阿斯娶了路得為妻,與她同房。耶和華使她懷孕生了一個兒子。 14婦女們對拿娥米說:「耶和華是應當稱頌的!因為他今日沒有使你斷絕可以贖產業的至親。願這孩子在以色列中得名聲。 15他必振奮你的精神,奉養你的晚年,因為他是愛慕你的媳婦所生的。有這樣的媳婦,比有七個兒子更好!」 16拿娥米接過孩子來,抱在懷中撫養他。 17鄰居的婦人給孩子起名,說:「拿娥米得了一個孩子了!」她們就給他起名叫俄備得。俄備得是耶西的父親,是大衛的祖父。

18這是法勒斯的後代:法勒斯生希斯崙; 19希斯崙生蘭;蘭生亞米拿達; 20亞米拿達生拿順;拿順生撒門; 21撒門生波阿斯;波阿斯生俄備得; 22俄備得生耶西;耶西生大衛。

弟兄姊妹平安,今日所讀的經文《路得記》4章1至22節,題目是「贖回路得,彰顯神恩」。

來到路得記最後一章,波阿斯終於有所決定,要想要從以利米勒最近的親屬中,屬回土地和人,看看這位親屬是否有興趣和是否決定買下來?於是到城門口尋找這人,找著了,得知他最後是要地不要人,這人就是拿俄米的兒媳婦路得,但後來知道要買他們的地,就必須要娶路得,並且要幫這以利米勒的家留後,這人就不肯,結果把機會留給波阿斯。今天的經文,路得記最後的大結局,究竟給我們有什麼提醒?

首先波阿斯去找那人,一定是想嘗試以正途得方式,娶下路得,而且當中需要正確的次序去尋求。

(一)尋找領袖印證十位長老為見證(得4:2)長老通常是宗族的首領或家族的家長,他們是統治該城的議會,主持立法和司法的事務。這件事沒有需要判決之處,他們的角色是監督整個協議過程,確保是完全依照法律和常例。他們也是協議的見證人。在這裡想一想 ,好多人都想直接得到神的產業祝福,卻不想走屬神的次序,或祂所設立的領袖群體,但波阿斯選擇走這屬靈次序的路。

(二)繼承權責這人有意贖地的理由(得4:4)這親屬相信贖了拿俄米的地,擴張自己原有的永久性地業是指日可待的事。因拿俄米沒有繼承人,她死后土地就歸這人所有,他的子孫也可繼承這地。

然而(得4:5)的話清楚顯示保全死者的名是他義務的一部分。他若與路得結婚,路得將來的兒子都成為以利米勒家業的繼承人。如此用來贖地的金錢便不再是投資,反而會縮減這人的家產。所用的金錢不會至終添加他家族的地業,只會成為慈惠的捐贈。

此外,他還要花錢供養拿俄米、路得,和不知多少兒女。路得的子女甚至可能有資格和他自己的子女共分他原有的產業。而且這人很可能已經結婚,救贖路得對他家庭的經濟衝擊,是他作這決定的主要因素。因此他不情願娶路得,因此連地和路得都不要,就此讓給下一位親屬波阿斯,因此,在眾長老面前以鞋為證!

脫鞋(得4:7-8)涼鞋是古代近東通用的鞋類,但也是具有象徵意義的衣物之一;於寡婦及其合法監護人尤然。 寡婦脫下監護人的鞋子(得4:7),就等於是剝奪這人管理她家族地產的權力。

而且以這交易的性質(得4:9-10)波阿斯購入了拿俄米一切地業財產,就負起了照顧她的全部責任,在世供應她的所需,死後予以殮葬。他接納路得,就是自願負責給她生兒育女的機會。她所生的第一個兒子將會成為以利米勒和他兩個兒子的繼承人。(得4:18)家系的重要性 我們在此發現本書發生的事件,幾乎令以色列家族之中斷絕了一脈。這一脈竟是大衛家。偉大的君王大衛差點沒有出生。這家譜證明神解決了這個家庭危機。

(三)贖回路得,彰顯神恩最後拿俄米的家系不但沒有絕後,反而成了以色列家的大族之一。使人能夠度過士師時代艱苦歲月的(得1:1)當士師秉政的時候,國中遭遇饑荒。是信實和忠誠,堅信跟隨,這信實忠誠得回應,至終沒有想到,在這跟隨神的旅途中,亦產生了大衛等人物(得4:21)的結局。

拿俄米兩個媳婦,路得和俄珥巴,一個選擇走回頭摩押的路,而路得卻選擇,跟隨拿俄米的國,拿俄米的神,以為死就死吧!這三個女人頭腦只想到,反正是死路一條,卻沒有想到,選擇拿俄米的神,卻帶來人生的超然延續,神能恢復他們的家族,恢復盼望的遠景、恢復齊齊整整的家庭和屬回人妻的身分。甚至君王由他們而出,耶穌基督的家譜榜上有名。

弟兄姊妹今天我們決定把生命交給我們的主,好好跟隨神,無論現在什麼事,神也可以成就祝福,包括我們想不到神的奇妙計劃!建立生命、齊齊復興。祝福大家!

Brothers and sisters, peace to you. Today’s passage is Ruth 4:1–22, and the topic is “Redeeming Ruth and Displaying God’s Grace.”

As we come to the final chapter of Ruth, Boaz finally makes his decision. He wants to redeem the land and the people connected to Elimelek from the nearest kinsman-redeemer, to see whether that man is willing to buy the land. So Boaz goes to the town gate to find him, and when he finds him, the man says he wants the land but not the people. This “people” is Naomi’s daughter-in-law Ruth. Once he learns that redeeming the land also requires marrying Ruth and raising up an heir for Elimelek’s family, he refuses. He gives Boaz the opportunity instead. In today’s passage—the final conclusion of Ruth—what reminders does it offer us?

First, Boaz goes to find the man because he wants to pursue a proper and lawful way to marry Ruth, following the correct order.


(1) Seeking Leadership Confirmation — Ten Elders as Witnesses (Ruth 4:2)

Elders were usually clan leaders or heads of households. They formed the governing council of the town, presiding over legislative and judicial matters. Although this case required no judgment, their role was to supervise the agreement, ensuring that everything followed the law and established custom. They also served as witnesses.

Here we may reflect: many people desire the blessings of God’s inheritance but do not want to follow God’s order or the leadership structures He has set. Boaz, however, chooses to follow this spiritual order.


(2) The Rights and Responsibilities of Redemption — The Man’s Reason for Wanting the Land (Ruth 4:4)

This kinsman most likely believed that redeeming Naomi’s land would expand his permanent inheritance. Since Naomi had no heir, upon her death the land would become his, and his children would inherit it.

However, Ruth 4:5 makes clear that preserving the name of the deceased was part of his duty. If he married Ruth, any son she bore would become the heir of Elimelek’s family. In that case, the money spent to redeem the land would no longer be an investment but would decrease his own estate; it would not expand his property but become an act of charity.

In addition, he would have to provide for Naomi, Ruth, and possibly multiple children. Ruth’s future children might even share inheritance rights with his own children from before. He was likely already married, so the financial impact on his family was a major concern. Thus he was unwilling to marry Ruth and therefore rejected both the land and Ruth, leaving the right to Boaz. Before all the elders, he confirmed this with the symbol of removing his sandal.


Removing the Sandal (Ruth 4:7–8)

Sandals were common footwear in the ancient Near East and also carried symbolic meaning, especially between a widow and her legal guardian. A widow removing her guardian’s sandal symbolised stripping him of the right to manage the family’s property.

Given the nature of this transaction (Ruth 4:9–10), Boaz purchased all the property of Naomi, taking full responsibility to care for her—providing for her needs in life and honouring her in death. By receiving Ruth, he voluntarily undertook the responsibility of giving her the opportunity to bear children. Her firstborn son would become the heir of Elimelek and his two sons.

Ruth 4:18 shows the importance of genealogy. The events of this book nearly caused a line in Israel to be cut off—this line was the line of King David. The great king David almost was never born. This genealogy proves that God resolved the crisis of this family.


(3) Redeeming Ruth and Displaying God’s Grace

In the end, Naomi’s family line not only survived but became one of the great families of Israel. During the harsh times of the judges (Ruth 1:1), when famine struck the land, it was faithfulness and loyalty—steadfast following—that carried them through. This faithful response unexpectedly produced figures like David (Ruth 4:21).

Naomi’s two daughters-in-law, Ruth and Orpah, chose different paths: Orpah returned to Moab, but Ruth chose to follow Naomi’s people and Naomi’s God, even unto death. These three women thought their lives were finished—yet choosing Naomi’s God brought extraordinary continuation. God restored their family, their hope, their future, and their identity as a complete household. From them came kings; their names appear in the genealogy of Jesus Christ.


Brothers and sisters, today as we decide to give our lives fully to the Lord and follow Him well, God can accomplish blessings in every situation—even those we do not expect. His wonderful plans build, restore, and renew our lives.
